Exposure changes the test condition
The relevant evidence is not simply that it rained. Record wind direction, intensity, duration, which elevation was affected, and whether the leak stopped as the wind changed.
Open fields, lake-facing slopes, ridges, nearby buildings, and tree cover can alter local exposure without creating one universal rule for a town or neighborhood.
Details that may behave differently in driven rain
- Rakes, eaves, starter, edge metal, and underlayment
- Roof-to-wall and dormer step flashing
- Chimney, skylight, vent, and pipe flashings
- Valleys and water concentrated from upper slopes
- Siding clearances, trim, windows, and wall weather layers
- Metal seams, closures, transitions, and penetrations
- Loose, lifted, cracked, or previously repaired covering
Use evidence instead of a generic sealant response
A repair should identify the likely pathway and restore the intended overlapping water-control sequence. Surface sealing every visible joint can trap water, hide the problem, and complicate later work.
When the path crosses roofing and wall components, the written scope should say which company opens and restores each layer and how concealed damage will be handled.

What open-water exposure actually does to a roof
Wind crossing open water arrives with less turbulence and less obstruction than wind crossing built-up land, and it works on the same details every winter: ridge caps, rake and eave edges, exposed fasteners, and any flashing relying on sealant rather than being integrated into the covering.
It also drives rain horizontally, which is how water gets into details designed to shed water falling more or less downward. A roof that performs perfectly in steady rain can leak in wind-driven rain from one particular direction — and noting that direction is the single most useful thing a homeowner can report.

- Fastening pattern that actually achieves the shingle's rated wind performance
- Ridge cap product and attachment appropriate to the exposure
- Rake and eave edge metal secured properly rather than minimally
- Flashing integrated at every transition rather than sealed
- On metal, seam type and clip spacing suited to the exposure
- Whether cold-weather installation left the roof unsealed through its first winter
