What to do when shingles are missing after wind

Missing shingles leave part of the roof assembly more exposed to water and ultraviolet light. Request a timely inspection, but do not climb onto the roof to count or replace shingles yourself.

When a repair may work

Localized replacement can be reasonable when compatible material can be integrated into a roof that remains serviceable. The roofer should explain the repair area and whether color or weathering differences are likely.

If shingles are broadly unsealed, brittle, repeatedly damaged, or at the end of their practical service life, a larger repair or replacement discussion may be appropriate.

Insurance documentation without promises

Record the date, weather, visible conditions, interior symptoms, temporary protection, and invoices. The roofing company can document conditions and price work; the insurer determines whether the policy covers the loss.

Lifted shingles may remain on the roof

Wind can break the seal or crease a shingle without carrying it away. The roof may look mostly complete from the ground while tabs, edges, ridges, or surrounding material have been disturbed.

A close professional inspection should identify the extent of affected material and whether repairs can be integrated without damaging brittle adjacent shingles. Photos should show location and scale, not just isolated close-ups.

  • Location at a field, ridge, rake, valley, or flashing
  • Condition of underlayment and decking
  • Number and distribution of affected areas

The damage that matters is often still on the roof

Short answerA shingle that lifted in the wind and dropped back into place may have a broken seal or a crease through its mat. It looks intact from the ground and will fail in the next moderate wind, frequently taking neighbours with it.

This is why a post-storm inspection is worth having even when nothing appears to be missing, and why losses often continue over several ordinary wind events after one significant storm. Creasing and broken seal bonds are found by looking closely at the roof, not by looking up at it.

It also matters for a claim. Damage documented soon after a storm is a straightforward conversation; the same damage discovered as a leak eight months later is a much harder one, because the link to the event has to be argued rather than shown.

Why a nearly new roof can lose shingles

Asphalt shingles bond by means of a heat-activated adhesive strip. A roof installed in cold weather may not seal until sustained warm weather arrives, and in that interval it is materially more vulnerable to uplift. Manufacturers publish cold-weather provisions — commonly including hand-sealing — for exactly this reason.

Fastening matters too. A shingle's wind rating assumes the stated nail count and correct nail placement. Nails driven high, overdriven, or too few will not achieve the rated performance regardless of what the wrapper claims. If a roof laid late in the Vermont season lost shingles that winter, both points are worth raising with the installer.

What to do when shingles are missing after wind questions

A few shingles blew off — is that urgent?

Urgent enough to act on. The exposed area lets water at the underlayment and deck, and the shingles around the gap have usually lost their seal too, which is why losses continue in later, milder wind.

What does a creased shingle mean?

It lifted and folded, breaking the mat along the crease. It can look intact from the ground but is compromised and will generally fail early. It is one of the main things a close inspection looks for.

My roof is nearly new — how did this happen?

Frequently because the adhesive strip had not yet sealed. Shingles installed in cold weather may not bond until sustained warmth arrives unless the manufacturer's cold-weather provisions were applied.

Will the repair match?

Possibly not exactly. Weathered asphalt changes colour and products get discontinued, so a repair on a prominent plane can be visible. On a low-visibility slope it rarely matters.

Do I need to replace the whole roof?

Not necessarily. It depends on how widespread the damage is, whether matching material is available, and the condition of the rest of the covering. Widespread seal failure is a different case from a dozen shingles off one slope.

Should I claim on insurance?

That depends on the extent, your deductible and your policy. Document thoroughly and notify promptly if you intend to claim — policies commonly contain notice requirements and time limits.

How strong does wind need to be to lift shingles?

There is no fixed threshold, since a properly fastened, fully sealed shingle withstands considerably more wind than one installed with too few nails or before it had time to seal. Actual installation quality matters more than any published wind-speed number.

Can I see wind damage better at certain times of day?

Low-angle light — early morning or late afternoon — can make lifted or creased shingles cast subtle shadows more visible from the ground than midday overhead light, which is a useful trick for a preliminary ground-level check.

Does the direction shingles face matter for wind vulnerability?

Yes — the plane most exposed to the prevailing or storm wind direction generally takes the most load, and shingles are also directional in how their tabs and seal strips are designed to resist uplift from a specific direction.

Is it common for only one small section of roof to lose shingles while the rest is fine?

Yes, and it is often explained by localized wind turbulence around a chimney, dormer, or roof edge, or by that specific area having been installed slightly differently (an add-on, a repair, a different crew or day).

Can missing shingles from one storm make the roof more vulnerable to the next storm?

Yes — an exposed area and the shingles with broken seals around it remain vulnerable until repaired, which is why losses often continue in progressively milder wind events following one significant storm.

Should I check my attic after wind damage even if I don't see a leak yet?

Yes — a look for fresh staining, damp insulation, or daylight at the roof deck can catch early water entry before it becomes a visible ceiling stain, giving you a head start on the repair.
