Can a gutter company repair rotten fascia?

Does open soffit cause a roof leak?

It can admit weather or animals and affect ventilation, but an interior leak may have another exterior source that needs investigation.

Should soffit vents be added everywhere?

No. Intake must fit the intended attic or roof assembly and work with air sealing, insulation, baffles, and exhaust.

Rotten fascia is usually reporting a drainage or ice problem

Short answerFascia and soffit deteriorate because water has been reaching them repeatedly — from overflowing or ice-filled gutters, missing or misaligned drip edge, ice-dam backup, or wind-driven rain at an unprotected edge — so replacing the wood without finding the water source repeats the failure.

The roof edge is where several systems meet, and it is the place where a small omission produces visible rot within a few years. Drip edge that is missing, too short, or installed so water runs behind the gutter rather than into it will wet the fascia on every rain. Gutters that overflow, that hold ice all winter, or that have pulled away at the hangers do the same on a larger scale. Ice-dam backup wets the whole assembly from above.

Because the visible damage appears at the fascia, that is what gets replaced — and two or three years later it is soft again. Ask what is being corrected alongside the carpentry, and be sceptical of a repair that is only carpentry.

Soffits carry the ventilation intake, and closing them causes new problems

The soffit is not only trim. It is where intake air enters the attic ventilation system, and repairs at the roof edge routinely compromise that without anyone intending to. Replacement soffit installed without maintaining vent openings, insulation pushed out to the eave during an energy upgrade with no baffles, or a solid panel fitted where a vented one was, all block the intake half of the ventilation system — and the consequences show up in winter as attic frost, condensation, and worse ice damming.

So a fascia and soffit repair is worth using as an opportunity. The eave is open, the rafter tails and the insulation edge are visible, and installing baffles and confirming intake at that moment costs far less than opening the same assembly again later.

Why did my fascia rot when my roof is fine?

Almost always because water has been reaching it repeatedly — overflowing or ice-filled gutters, missing or misaligned drip edge, ice-dam backup, or roofing that does not extend far enough over the edge. The roof field can be entirely sound while the edge detail admits water on every rain.

Can fascia be replaced without replacing the roof?

Usually yes. It is edge carpentry plus correcting whatever was wetting it, and it commonly involves lifting the lowest roofing course and the drip edge rather than disturbing the roof generally.

Will replacing the soffit affect my attic ventilation?

It can, and this is the risk worth watching. Soffits carry the intake air for attic ventilation, and fitting solid panels or losing vent area blocks the intake half of the system. Attic frost and worse ice damming the following winter is the usual consequence.

Should the gutters be replaced at the same time?

Frequently it makes sense, because the gutter has usually been part of the cause and it has to come off anyway. Doing the drip edge, fascia, and gutter as one operation is how the detail actually gets corrected.

What is drip edge and does my roof need it?

How do I know how far the damage goes?

Can woodpeckers or squirrels cause fascia damage?

Yes. Woodpeckers drill into wood fascia looking for insects or establishing territory, and squirrels can chew through softened or already-damaged wood to nest in a soffit cavity. Either can be mistaken for simple rot — worth mentioning to the roofing company if you have seen the activity, since the underlying wood condition and any entry point both need addressing.

Is vinyl or aluminum trim better for Vermont's climate?

Both perform reasonably in this climate; aluminum resists denting less well than vinyl resists cracking in extreme cold, and each has different expansion behavior and paint/color options. The more consequential choice is usually correct installation and ventilation detailing rather than the material itself.

How long does a typical fascia and soffit repair take?
