The clue that settles it
- Drips on clear cold nights with no precipitation at all
- Moisture spread evenly across the underside of panels rather than at one point
- Frost on the panel underside in cold weather
- Damp spreading from the highest, coldest part of the roof downward
- Worse after a vehicle is parked inside wet or snowy
Where the moisture comes from
Metal panels over an unheated space cool rapidly at night, often below the dew point of the air inside. Any humidity in that air condenses on the cold metal and eventually drips. The humidity itself has ordinary sources: ground moisture rising through an earth or unsealed slab floor, a vehicle brought in wet and snowy, stored damp material, livestock, or simply humid outdoor air that entered during the day and cooled at night.
This is why the problem is worst in exactly the buildings people assume are simplest — a bare metal roof over an open span with a dirt floor is close to an ideal condensation machine.
What actually works

What does not work
Sealing the roof. There is no hole, so there is nothing to seal, and money spent on sealant, tape, or a new covering achieves nothing. This is the single most common expensive mistake made on outbuildings in this region.
Adding insulation without a vapour strategy can also make it worse by moving the condensing surface rather than removing it. If a building is going to be insulated, the assembly needs designing as a whole — where the vapour control sits, where the air barrier sits, and whether the roof is vented or unvented.
