Shingles lifted, creased, or blown off after wind

Missing shingles are obvious. The damage that matters more is often the shingle still in place but no longer sealed down — creased, lifted at the edge, or with its seal broken.

What to look for from the ground

The damage you cannot see is the point

Short answerA shingle that lifted and dropped back into place may have a broken seal or a crease through its mat. It looks intact from the ground and will fail in the next moderate wind, often taking neighbouring shingles with it.

This is why a post-storm inspection is worth having even when nothing appears to be missing. Creased shingles and broken seal bonds are found by looking closely at the roof, not by looking up at it, and they are the reason a roof can lose material progressively over several ordinary wind events after one significant storm.

It is also why the connection to a specific weather event matters for an insurance claim. Damage documented soon after the storm is a straightforward conversation; the same damage discovered as a leak eight months later is a much harder one.

Why a nearly new roof can lose shingles

Asphalt shingles bond by means of a heat-activated adhesive strip. A roof installed in cold weather may not seal until sustained warm weather arrives, and in that interval it is materially more vulnerable to wind uplift than a fully bonded roof.

Manufacturers publish cold-weather provisions — commonly including hand-sealing — for exactly this reason. If a roof was installed late in the Vermont season and lost shingles that winter, that history is relevant to the conversation with both the installer and the manufacturer, and it is worth raising rather than assuming bad luck.

Fastening matters too. A shingle's wind rating assumes the stated nail count and correct nail placement; nails driven high, overdriven, or too few will not achieve it regardless of what the wrapper claims.

What to do now

  • Photograph everything before clearing debris, and note the date and conditions
  • Keep any shingles that came off — they help identify the product
  • Check ceilings and the attic for water entry before assuming there is none
  • Request an inspection rather than waiting for a leak to develop
  • Notify your insurer promptly if you intend to claim, and keep mitigation invoiced separately

Only a few shingles came off — does that matter?

Yes, for two reasons. The exposed area lets water at the underlayment and deck, and the shingles around the gap have usually lost their seal too, which is why losses tend to continue in later, milder wind.

What does a creased shingle mean?

It lifted in the wind and folded, breaking the mat along the crease line. It may look intact from the ground but it is compromised and will generally fail early. Creasing is one of the main things a close inspection looks for after a storm.

My roof is nearly new — how did it lose shingles?

Frequently because the adhesive strip had not yet sealed. Shingles installed in cold weather may not bond until sustained warmth arrives, leaving the roof more exposed to uplift in the interim unless the manufacturer's cold-weather provisions were applied.

Do I need to replace the whole roof after wind damage?

Not necessarily. It depends on how widespread the damage is, whether matching material is available, and the condition of the rest of the covering. Widespread seal failure across several planes is a different conversation from a dozen shingles off one slope.

Will the repair match my existing shingles?

Possibly not exactly. Weathered asphalt changes colour and specific products get discontinued, so a repair on a prominent plane can be visible. That is sometimes acceptable and sometimes an argument for a larger scope — but it should be a decision you make knowingly.

How long do I have to report storm damage to my insurer?

Policies contain notice requirements and time limits that vary. Notify promptly rather than waiting for a contractor's report — early notice followed by documentation is a much safer sequence than the reverse.

What wind speed typically causes shingle damage?

There is no single reliable threshold — a shingle's actual wind rating depends on correct fastening and a fully sealed adhesive strip, so a properly installed, bonded roof can withstand more than the same product installed with too few nails or before it had time to seal.

Can lifted shingles reseal themselves without repair?

Sometimes, if sustained warm weather returns before the next wind event and the seal was only partially broken. It is not something to count on, since a shingle that lifted once has a compromised seal and remains more vulnerable until it is checked or resealed.

Does shingle age affect how vulnerable it is to wind lift?

Yes — the adhesive strip and the mat itself both age, and an older shingle nearing the end of its service life is generally more brittle and more likely to crease or lose its seal in wind than a newer one.

Is roof orientation a factor in how much wind damage a roof takes?

Yes — the plane facing the prevailing wind direction, and any plane with little upwind shelter, generally takes more sustained wind load than a sheltered plane, which is why damage is often concentrated on one side of a roof rather than spread evenly.

Can I add extra sealant myself to prevent future wind lift?

This is not a recommended DIY fix. Improperly applied sealant can trap moisture, interfere with the shingle's designed drainage path, and does not address why the seal failed in the first place. Have a lifted or unsealed shingle assessed and correctly resealed or replaced.

Does a steep roof pitch increase or decrease wind vulnerability?

It can go either way depending on the specific wind dynamics and detailing — pitch changes how wind interacts with the roof surface, but fastening quality and whether the shingles have fully sealed matter more than pitch alone in most cases.
